Methodology of organic-rich shale lithofacies identification and prediction: A case study from Marcellus Shale in the Appalachian basin

چکیده
The success of shale gas in North America has attracted increased interest in “unconventional” reservoirs. Two critical factors for shale-gas reservoirs are units amenable to hydrologic fracture stimulation and sufficient natural gas content. The effectiveness of hydrologic fracture stimulation is influenced by rock geomechanical properties, which are related to rock mineralogy. The natural gas content in shale reservoirs has a strong relationship with organic matter, which is measured by total organic carbon (TOC). A 3D shale lithofacies model constructed using mineral composition, rock geomechanical properties and TOC content can be applied to optimize the design of horizontal well trajectories and stimulation strategies. Core analysis data, log data and seismic data were used to build a 3D shale lithofacies from core to well and finally to regional scale. Core, advanced and common logs were utilized as inputs to petrophysical analysis, and various pattern recognition methods, such as discriminant analysis, fuzzy logic, neural network and support vector machine. A limited set of eight derived parameters from common logs were

Identifying organic-rich Marcellus Shale lithofacies by support vector machine classifier in the Appalachian basin
Unconventional shale reservoirs as the result of extremely low matrix permeability, higher potential gas productivity requires not only sufficient gas-in-place, but also a high concentration of brittle minerals (silica and/or carbonate) that is amenable to hydraulic fracturing. Shale lithofacies is primarily defined by mineral composition and organic matter richness, and its representation as a...
متن کاملThe application of improved NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies neural network in Marcellus Shale lithofacies prediction
Abstract: The organic-rich Marcellus Shale was deposited in a foreland basin during Middle Devonian. In terms of mineral composition and organic matter richness, we define seven mudrock lithofacies: three organic-rich lithofacies and four organic-poor lithofacies. The 3D lithofacies model is very helpful to determine geologic and engineering sweet spots, and consequently useful for designing ho...

Unconventional reservoirs are keys to oil and gas exploration and development, especially shale gas reservoirs. Discriminated shale gas reservoir lithofacies are, in particular, a primary problem in shale gas reservoir engineering. The mineral composition will affect both absorbed and free gas contents, therefore their identification is important. The mineral composition is one part of lithofac...
متن کامل987565 Deformation in the Appalachian Foreland: Detachment Structures in the Basal Marcellus Shale, Central New York
Décollement zones within the organic-rich black shale members of the basal Marcellus Formation in New York and Pennsylvania have been recognized for some time (Nickelsen, 1986; Evans, 1994, among others). Outcrop study of the upper Onondaga Formation-Marcellus Formation contact at three localities in the central New York outcrop belt (Figure 1) demonstrates that thrust fault structures are pres...
متن کاملUnconventional Shale-gas plays and their characterization through 3-D seismic attributes and logs
Unconventional shale-gas plays are formed by fine-grained organic-rich shales of tight-porosity and ultralow permeability which act as the source, seal, and the reservoir rock. The shale-as-reservoir has its beginnings in 1820 but commercial shale-gas wells were drilled in 1990s in Mississippian Barnett Shale of USA by Mitchell Energy after prolonged (about 17 years) experimentations and advanc...
